Shift is looking for an Executive Director
to help scale our impact. 

Shift Cycling Culture is working towards a future where cyclists can satisfy their desire for adventure, speed, innovation and design while having a net positive impact on the state of our planet.

The world of cycling is a fast-growing global community, a tight-knit ecosystem of passionate cyclists, consumers, cycling businesses, network organisations, marketeers, media, professional teams and event organisers. We all share one common thread: our love for the bicycle, and where it takes us.

​The last few decades have seen a lot of changes to our shared playground. From the saddles of our bikes, we have a front row seat in witnessing the climate crisis unfold. Extreme weather conditions, changing landscapes, diminishing biodiversity - climate change is no longer a future threat, it has become a reality. And it’s happening in our own backyards. 

We need to shift that, but the changes required for a sustainable future are complex and cannot be solved by any individual or single company. 


Shift Cycling Culture is a not-for-profit foundation with the aim to drive collaboration on a global scale, supporting the cycling world to take action on climate change collectively. We accelerate the shift to responsible production and use in the cycling world by telling inspiring stories, enabling collaboration, developing capability and supporting action on climate change.

Our team currently consists of four Directors (part-time, voluntary basis) and a part-time Operations Manager. We have an intrinsic drive and the network to deliver our strategy. Over the last two years, we have been steadily building momentum and we see a lot of opportunities to shift the world of cycling. But we need a passionate and experienced Executive Director to lead and grow our impact.

ABOUT THE JOB

Location:           Fully remote; anywhere within a time-zone max +/-2h from CET
Reports to:        Shift Cycling Culture Board
Hours:                Full time position (36-40 hours per week)
Annual leave:    25 days (equivalent to full time employment) + public holidays
Duration:           2-year fixed term, with continuation subject to securing funding.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Executive Director is responsible for the delivery of Shift's strategy.

You will ​​develop our organisation to deliver impact now and in the future. This includes working with the board on our mid- to long term strategy, fundraising, staff recruitment and hiring (e.g. communications, community, operations manager), staff and volunteer management, finance and communications and overall responsibility for the operational management of Shift Cycling Culture. 

 

​Leadership & management:

  • Responsible for planning, organisation and direction of the organisation’s operations and programs.

  • Oversee and report on the organisation’s results for board of directors.​

  • Develop an appropriate staffing structure, including both paid and volunteer positions.

  • Responsible for creating and leading delivery of  a programme of online meetups for Shift’s community

  • Lead on and take responsibility for the future expansion of Shift into new projects.

  • Recruit and work with the delivery team to ensure regular activities are run efficiently and deliver on strategic objectives.

  • Lead on and take responsibility for developing and implementing business and operational plans with clear objectives.  

  • Manage and support the paid staff team.  

  • Ensure compliance with company and foundation law, including attendance at, and reporting to Board meetings and other committees as agreed.
     

Fundraising & communications:

  • Implement and enhance our funding plan, including recruiting, onboarding and supporting patrons, developing service-based revenue streams with the board, and identifying and applying for government grants.

  • In conjunction with the Treasurer, take overall responsibility for Shift’s finances to ensure long-term financial stability for the organisation. 

  • Lead on the development of and take responsibility for delivering Shift’s communications strategy (including internal and external comms, digital media, website etc.).

  • Extend and build professional relationships with industry leaders, trade organisations and other relevant statutory and third sector agencies globally. Key relationships: cycling industry (suppliers, brands, retailers, media), National Sport Agencies, Event Organisers, relevant interest groups and advocate organisations.

Other:

  • Lead on, and implement Shift's sustainability strategy.

  • Be responsible for the development and implementation of the foundation's policies and procedures.

  • Advocate for equality and diversity within the organisation, developing our culture of inclusion. ​

 

ABOUT YOU

You are an entrepreneurial, proactive, reliable and well-organised leader. You are able to self-start (and finish) the actions required to deliver our strategy. 

  • You will be a proud spokesperson for the organisation as the key contact with our main stakeholders.

  • You have a proven track record in building an organisation. You are team-oriented, accountable, and focused on the continuous improvement of our organisation and of yourself. You have been doing this type of work in an organisation for at least 5 years.

  • You are an excellent communicator and negotiator comfortable engaging with a wide range of people, especially c-suite.

  • You have a passion for sustainability and a proven track record in ESG and/or CO2-management.

  • You are confident in setting and managing a budget. 

  • You have knowledge and experience in raising capital investment and/ or fundraising campaigns.

  • You bring to this role experience in positively engaging with a Non-Executive Board.

  • You are able to demonstrate success in developing stakeholder relationships at multiple levels and enjoy working with others.  

  • You are as passionate about shifting the cycling industry and community to a more sustainable future as we are. 

  • Needless to say; you love riding your bike.

Shift Cycling Culture is constantly changing and evolving. This will require you to be flexible and able to work through ambiguity effectively, but also provides the opportunity to grow and use your skills wherever they can be a positive contribution to Shift’s objectives.​

  • €3,500 - €5,000 gross per month (depending on experience);

  2. We will invite the best (5) applicants for a Zoom interview in the weeks of August 15 - 26, 2022

  3. We look to invite the top 2 candidates for a bike ride & interview in the UK or the Netherlands (first half of Sept 2022)

  4. Starting date in consultation, ideally no later than 1 October 2022
