Launched in 2021, the Shift Cycling Industry Climate Commitment provided a crucial starting point in the cycling industry. More than 80 companies committed to measuring and reducing their climate impacts in line with the Paris Agreement and global goal to keep temperature rise to 1,5 degree.

Two years later, in 2023, Shift introduced the Climate Action Roadmap, an open-source self-assessment tool designed to guide organisations from ambition to action. The annual Climate Action Pulse Check is seen as a tool to monitor the progress of the industry in these areas.

It provides valuable insights into case studies that shine a light on how companies are addressing their impacts and working towards a more sustainable cycling world. The survey helps to identify common roadblocks to action and where collective action is needed to move forward.

The results will feed into our Climate Action Roadmap and are published anonymously in an annual report highlighting key results, conclusions and opportunities for individual companies and the industry as a whole to scale action and positive change.

The survey was conducted by Shift Cycling Culture. We were responsible for both carrying out the Climate Action Pulse Check and publishing the results independently, more on the methodology used for this survey can be found below.

The Climate Action Pulse Check is made up of two online surveys – one targeting the cycling industry and the other targeting cycling consumers.

The surveys ask a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions that will allow to track development and changes over time. These questions were created and reviewed internally by the team of Shift Cycling Culture. For some questions predefined responses were given as options for the participant to choose from. In these cases, an open ‘Other’ option was always provided for the participant to share their individual answer in addition or instead.

As an organisation:

1. As a participant in the survey, you will receive a summary of the survey results including an individual benchmark of your organisation’s level of action.

2. Your insights will help identify common roadblocks to action and decide where collective action is needed to move forward.

3. Your contribution will inform the work of Shift and our community and will help to create a powerful tool for the industry to drive ambition and action.

As a cyclist consumer:

1. It’s a simple but effective way to share your feedback with the industry

The Pulse Check includes two surveys, one for the cycling industry and one for the cycling consumer.

We want to hear from any organisation in the cycling world – from a small start-up to the biggest brands, from manufacturers to retailers, event and race organisers, to bring transparency into where we are making progress and where we need to speed up.

But the results of this survey would be incomplete without some insights from the cycling consumer. Does sustainability influence your purchases? What climate-related efforts are most important to you? And what would you like to see happening more of in the industry?

The survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes of your time.

The results are published anonymously in an annual report, highlighting key results, conclusions on progress and opportunities. As a participant in the industry survey you will also receive an company benchmark report by email.

Every industry participant receives a personalised benchmark report that compares their company’s efforts with others. It helps identify areas for improvement, and share progress with colleagues, leadership team and other stakeholders to spark conversation and drive action.
