With the purpose of driving positive climate action across the cycling industry, the Shift Climate Commitment was launched on 1st November 2021 by a group of CEOs together with Shift Cycling Culture.
This commitment, in the form of a letter to the industry, is an urgent appeal to acknowledge the cycling industry’s responsibility in reaching the UN Paris Agreement targets on Climate Change, and to do so collectively. Read the original letter*.
All organisations across the cycling industry are invited to sign the Climate Commitment and to become part of this movement to accelerate climate action and to build a more sustainable and resilient cycling world.
By signing, companies commit to the following:
1. Report: Within 12 months of signing, we will measure and disclose our company’s carbon footprint,
including Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, as well as Scope 3 emissions from business travel, in line with
the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This disclosure will be made annually going forward.
2. Reduce: We will disclose our plans to reduce GHG emissions by at least 55% by 2030 (against a baseline
of no earlier than 2015) within 24 months of signing this commitment.
*In 2024, we updated the commitment. Recognising that it has proven to be an effective starting point for driving a company's climate strategy, we made slight revisions to allow more CEOs to sign the commitment.
We recognise that neither of these commitments are particularly groundbreaking. However, it has shown to be an effective starting point for companies to move their climate agenda forward.
None of the signatories claim to be perfect. They are all at different points on their sustainability journey, but the main thing is that the industry works on this together.
Please note signatories are required to be on CEO level
Founding signatories:
"As a group of business leaders from across the cycling industry, we have become acutely aware that climate change is not only a future risk, but a current one, which is accelerating before our eyes.
We are proud that cycling plays an important part in decarbonising our world, by enabling people to ride their bikes, enjoy the outdoors and make cities more liveable by taking cars off the streets. At the same time, the way in which we in the cycling industry make and sell products is also contributing to the problem.
We need to change this, but we can’t do it on our own, which is why we’re making an urgent appeal to you, our partners and competitors across the wider industry."
